Abstract:
Person identification using fingerprint impressions has been widely studied and employed for over 2000 years. Emerging 3D finger sensing technologies enable deformation free and hygienic acquisition of ground truth fingerprint information. Acquisition of subsurface 3D finger details can also enable detection of sophisticated presentation attacks and is critical for very high security applications. In addition to improving the user-friendliness and user-privacy, contactless 3D fingerprint identification also enables significantly enhanced limits on the individuality of fingerprints, which makes it very attractive for very large-scale personal identification applications. In this talk, we will discuss on recent advances towards such emerging 3D fingerprint identification technologies and share achieved results. I also plan to discuss on the technical challenges that are limiting the deployment of emerging contactless 3D fingerprint identification technologies and these needs to be addressed with much needed further research in this area.

Biography:
Ajay Kumar received the Ph.D. degree from The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, in 2001. He was an Assistant Professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Delhi, Delhi, India, from 2005 to 2007. He is currently an Associate Professor with the Department of Computing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His current research interests are on biometrics with an emphasis on hand biometrics, vascular biometrics, iris, and multimodal biometrics. He holds seven U.S. patents, and has authored on biometrics and computer vision based industrial inspection. He was on the Editorial Board of the IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security from 2010 to 2013, and served on the program committees of several international conferences and workshops in the field of his research interest. He was the Program Chair for ICEB 2010 (Hong Kong) and Program Co-Chair for the IJCB 2011 (Washington DC), ICB 2013 (Madrid), and CVPR 2013-2018 Biometrics Workshops. He has also served as the General Co-Chair of the IJCB 2014 (Tampa), ISBA 2015 (Hong Kong) and serving General Chair for WIFS 2018 to be held in Hong Kong. He serves on the Editorial Board of Pattern Recognition Journal and has served on the IEEE Biometrics Council as the Vice President (Publications) during 2011-2015. He is a Fellow of IAPR and IEEE.

Abstract:
The notion of a computer-mediated or virtual reality, in which synthetic objects or the entire virtual environment get indistinguishable from the real world, dates back to Plato’s “The Allegory of the Cave” and has been reconsidered again and again in science fiction literature as well as the movie industry. For instance, virtual reality is often used to question whether we truly “know” if our perceptions are real or not. Early science fiction movies like “The Matrix” or the fictional holodeck from the Star Trek universe are prominent examples of these kind of perceptual ambiguities. Furthermore, in movies like Steven Spielberg’s “Minority Report”, Jon Favreau’s “Iron Man′′, or Brad Bird’s “Mission Impossible 4” actors can seamlessly use free-hand gestures in space combined with speech to manipulate 3D holographic projections, while they also perceive haptic feedback when touching virtual objects.
In my talk I will revisit some of the most visually impressive 3D user interfaces and experiences, and discuss their benefits and drawbacks. Finally, I will argue that successful user interfaces for the next human-computer interaction paradigm need to be supernatural, spatial, smart, and social.

Biography:
Frank Steinicke is a professor for Human-Computer Interaction at the Department of Informatics at the University of Hamburg. His research is driven by understanding the human perceptual, cognitive and motor abilities and limitations in order to reform the interaction as well as the experience in computer-mediated realities. Frank Steinicke regularly serves as panelist and speaker at major events in the area of virtual reality and human-computer interaction and is on the IPC of various national and international conferences. He serves as the program chair for IEEE VR 2017/2018, which is the most renowned scientific conference in the area of VR/AR. Furthermore, he is a member of the Steering committee of the ACM SUI Symposium and the GI SIG VR/AR, and currently editor of the IEEE Computer Graphics & Applications Department on Spatial Interfaces.

Abstract:
What happens during psychotherapy that enables clients to improve? What affective mechanisms underlie depression? How does patient affect respond to novel biologically-based treatments? These are fundamental questions for clinical research and treatment.

Recent breakthroughs in automated multimodal analysis and synthesis make possible objective, valid, and efficient clinically useful behavioral indicators to address these and related questions. I will present: 1) human-observer and computational approaches to measurement that guide affective computing for clinical practice and research; 2) recent applications in depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder; 3) “expression transfer” that could enable sharing of clinical video without compromising patient anonymity; and 4) current challenges for affective computing in clinical practice and research.

Biography:
Jeffrey Cohn, PhD, is Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh and Adjunct Professor at the Robotics Institute, Carnegie Mellon University. He leads interdisciplinary and inter-institutional efforts to develop advanced methods of automatic analysis and synthesis of face and body movement and applies them to research in human emotion, communication, psychopathology, and biomedicine. His research has been supported by grants from the U.S. National Institutes of Health and U.S. National Science Foundation among other sponsors. He Chairs the Steering Committee of the IEEE International Conference on Automatic Face and Gesture Recognition (FG) and has served as General Chair of international conferences on automatic face and gesture recognition, affective computing, and multimodal interfaces.

Abstract:
Sketch and sculpt interfaces have often been touted as “natural” approaches to interactive design. While this metaphor is indeed a promising medium of visual communication, there are a number of inherent limitations in human motor control, drawing skill, perception, and the ambiguities of inference, that make the leap from 2D input to 3D shape a challenging task. In this talk, I will present recent research, open challenges in the perception of shape from sketch input, and highlights of various systems such as true2form, www.ilovesketch.com, www.crossshade.com, www.meshmixer.com and www.flatfab.com, that facilitate the leap from 2D input to 3D models despite these limitations.

Biography:
Karan Singh is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Toronto. He co-directs a globally reputed graphics and HCI lab, DGP, has over 100 peer-reviewed publications, and has supervised over 40 MS/PhD theses. His research interests lie in interactive graphics, spanning art and visual perception, geometric design and fabrication, character animation and anatomy, and interaction techniques for mobile, Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR). He has been a technical lead for the Oscar award winning software Maya and was the R&D Director for the 2004 Oscar winning animated short Ryan. He has co-founded multiple companies including Arcestra (architectural design), JALI (facial animation), and JanusVR (Virtual Reality).
